Chicago – Andersonville
Andersonville is known for its Swedish roots dating back to the nineteenth century. The movement of Swedish immigrants from the city first after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and then during the Great Depression of the 1920s shaped one of the most unique Swedish culture hotspots in the nation. Andersonville today however is very diverse and claims home to more than just the Swedish, but also many Asian and Middle-Eastern families.
Diversity has become one of the community’s strong features. A strong female movement spurred Andersonville to become a feminist art and literature enclave within Chicago. Andersonville is also known for the large gay and lesbian community surrounding the trendy bars and nightclubs on Clark Street.
There is still much expected to change in Andersonville
in the future, and it will definitely blossom into one of the most noticeable
and unique Chicago communities in the 21st century.
